Americans most confident in five years
May consumer index shows growing optimism about U.S. economy
By Jeffry Bartash, MarketWatch
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Americans have the most confidence in five years about the nation’s economic prospects, according to a closely followed survey released Tuesday.
The U.S. consumer-confidence index climbed to a five-year high of ۷۶.۲ in May from an upwardly revised ۶۹.۰ in April, the Conference Board said. The increase beat the forecast of economists polled by MarketWatch, who expected the index to rise to ۷۲.۳.
The surge in confidence mirrors another survey, known as consumer sentiment, that hit a six-year high this month. Higher confidence suggests that the U.S. economy will remain on a modest growth path, with a chance for acceleration in the second half of ۲۰۱۳.
