Signs of trouble at Iran nuke talks
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) — Talks seeking to find common ground between Iran and a group of six nations over concerns that Tehran’s nuclear program might be used to make weapons appeared to run into trouble shortly after they began Friday.
Failure to produce some interim deal in Almaty could stall further talks, fueling an escalation of sanctions and military threats, according to analyst Mark Dubowitz, executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington.
“Time for peaceful pressure is running out,” said Dubowitz, who advises U.S. lawmakers on sanctions. “If the Almaty talks fail, Congress likely will move forward on new sanctions that will massively intensify the economic pressure on Iran.”
"I have said…what these negotiations are about," Mr. Mann told reporters. "This sort of semantic question about recognizing the right to do X, Y, Z—that is not what we are here for. We are here to talk about the substantive situation on the ground," he said.
